There are some days when it feels impossible to get motivated to focus on your business tasks. Yet in order to achieve your goals, motivation is essential. Without it, nothing is accomplished. Responsibilities and tasks pile up. Life becomes overwhelming. Motivation becomes more elusive and harder to find.
However, with a few simple strategies you can find that motivation every day. (I am sharing seven here.) Even doing only one of them will help. Try all seven and you’ll find yourself revved up and ready to go on a regular basis!
In this article…
Understand what will keep you motivated
Some people are motivated by a sense of accomplishment, other people are motivated by praise, and still others are motivated by money. It’s possible you’re motivated entirely by something else. Understanding what motivates you will help you to stay energized. When you’re feeling unmotivated, you can tap into that desire and get the kick-start you need.
For example, if you’re motivated by money, you might kick-start your day by doing something that earns a profit. Consider looking at the task(s) you’re facing differently, thinking how they may generate income (or make an impact etc.) By connecting the task to an outcome that is important to you, you will complete the task with greater enthusiasm.
Create a morning routine
Routines help set the mood for the day. If your morning routine doesn’t support you to be motivated, it needs to be changed. A morning routine that supports motivation and energy might include:
- Exercise—walking or stretching.
- Meditation—five to ten minutes is all you need.
- Writing practice
- Drinking water or having a healthy breakfast

Start each workday doing something you enjoy and that inspires you
What do you enjoy doing? What part of your business do you feel passionate about? Start your day focusing on those tasks and responsibilities.
I have seen it written to start with your most dreaded tasks first. However, I disagree because if you start your day doing something you dislike, it’s really difficult to feel motivated. Conversely, if you start each day doing what you love, the rest of the day is much easier to manage. And it’s much easier to get out of bed feeling upbeat and motivated.
Take time away from work
Owning your own business can be a round-the-clock job. You go to bed thinking about your business. You wake up thinking about it. This kind of non-stop attention can be draining. It’s easy to lose motivation. Take time away from your business every day. Create working hours and stick to them. Take time during your day to get some fresh air and exercise, too.
Take time off for vacations
Enjoy time with friends and family. And take time for yourself. When you are able to separate from your work-related responsibilities, it’s much easier to come back to them with energy and a smile. Even knowing that a vacation is out there, scheduled and waiting to be taken, can be motivating.
Often, I suggest my clients schedule a “ME” day every 30 days. This is a day (usually scheduled during the weekdays) where you schedule 24 hours (midnight to midnight) where you wake up with nothing scheduled. You spend time on whatever you want in the moment. NO email, NO work calls, just time spent on self and whatever you want. Every single person who does this reports feeling energized and with increased motivation that lasts much longer than 24 hours.
I invite you to schedule your “ME” day in your calendar right now and let me know how it goes.

You don’t have to do everything. In fact, you probably shouldn’t. Others can do some tasks better than you (and they will enjoy it more also.) It saves you time, energy and money. Additionally, you’re able to focus on the tasks you enjoy and the tasks that bring in money. Consider outsourcing or hiring employees to manage some tasks.
For example, most administrative tasks are often easy and inexpensive to outsource to an assistant. And these are the tasks that often feel the most draining to you but to the right person are the tasks that energize them. WIN-WIN!
Find a few E-motion triggers
Emotion is just Energy in Motion so when you are feeling a dip in your motivation- there may be a dip in your emotional frequency as well. Check in and see how you are feeling and then ask yourself, “What can you do in moment to shift that emotion to one with a higher frequency?”
For example, is there a song that helps you feel energetic and boosts your mood? Put on the music and begin to tap along with the beat.
Does working in a different environment help motivate you? Get up and move around if you are able.
Is there an affirmation or happy thought that makes you smile and feel motivated? Put that quote or picture of your family, vacation (anything that creates that feeling of happiness) where you can easily see it so you can tap into it whenever you feel the need. It is a simple thing that can bring on that smile and change up your energy.
